Who is NCSSM SG?

Student Government works with Academic Programs, Student Life, Institutional Advancement, and other departments and administrators across campus to build a more supportive academic setting, a stronger social community, and a healthier campus climate for students. In addition to hosting events and funding clubs, the SG budget is dedicated to special initiatives and projects that benefit the student body and improve the student experience. 

Student Government - 44th Session

Steaven Ramírez Serrano (He/Him) - Student Body President 

Hey, y'all! I'm Steaven, and I am proud to be YOUR Student Body President. I plan on pushing for a universal assignment deadline across all academic departments, creating more events intended to increase connections of our student body with NCSSM alumni as it relates to the academic, professional, and wellness aspects. I would also like to promote activities to increase students' engagement with SG. I'm from Graham, North Carolina. In my free time, you will probably catch me walking around 9th Street with friends, playing tennis, or roaming around in Durham.

Arnav Garg (He/Him) - Student Senate President

I am from Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and attended Ardrey Kell High School. My plans as the Senate President for next year are to have more community service-related events, mental health resources, and work with committee leads to enhance our campus. I also want to ensure Durham and Morganton work together for a successful joint SG! 

Rishika Jalagam (She/Her) - Student Body Treasurer

Hey everyone! I'm Rishika, the Student Body Treasurer this year, and I love raising money to help others achieve their goals. My main goal this year is to help you utilize the resources of student government, student life at NCSSM, and pathways to funding for whatever projects you think of! I want to make the process as transparent and accessible as possible with the support of my incredible Treasury Board and the rest of the student government. Additionally, I will use my position to amplify the voices and needs of the student body to administrators. I also love trees and the sun, so you'll find me outside going on walks or sitting in the sun as much as possible. I am so excited for this year and thrilled to work with you all, so please reach out if you need anything! 


Lilly Copplestone (She/Her) - Senate Secretary and Co-Chair of Campus Improvement and Renovations

Hey! I'm Lilly Copplestone. I'm from Burlington, NC, and will be living on Reynolds 2E. I've been on our school's tennis and track teams and am on a club sailing team. I love doing anything outside and hanging out with friends. I love the people at our school and would love to better our community and campus through student government and sustainable improvements.

Karl Osei-Boateng (He/Him) - Chair of Academic Affairs

Greetings Y'all, I'm Karl Osei-Boateng. I'm from Gastonia, North Carolina. I plan to improve re-testing and TA services. I hope to instate quiz and/or test retakes in the math department to allow students to make the effort to improve their grades. I also want to create a better system for TA which would allow for students to make it easier to find help.

Natalie Jones (She/Her) - Chair of Student Affairs

Hi, I'm Natalie Jones! I am from Fayetteville, NC. I am thrilled to be serving as Senior Senator as Director of the Student Affairs committee. This year, I hope to inspire and spread community by regularly planning school wide events. I also want to advocate for each of your voices. In my free time, I enjoy dancing and singing, as well as spending time with friends. I am excited to be your senator this year! 

Maddy Gordon (She/Her) - Chair of Outreach 

Hi everyone! I’m Maddy and I’m so excited for SG this year. I got to serve as the Beall Dorm Senator last year on both the Outreach and Academic Affairs committee. As dorm sen I got to start my very own passion project: Farmers Market Van Loops. These loops transport students to the local Durham Farmers Market. The Farmers Market is a great way to support local businesses while also having access to fresh produce and affordable groceries. So far I have planned three loops that have helped 100 students! Next year I hope to continue these loops, make them more frequent, and set up loops to other locations. I also hope to plan a Senior Leadership Fair(in January) to help the class of 2025 choose what leadership positions to apply to. I can't wait to work with you all this year!! I know we will do amazing things!

Jessily Chen (Any Pronouns) - Chair of Mental Health and Accessibility

Hey everyone! My name is Jessily Chen, and I enjoy playing lacrosse, watching anime, and listening to music! I am absolutely delighted to serve as your senior senator and head of the Mental Health Committee for the upcoming year! In my role, your needs, concerns, and aspirations are my utmost priority. I'll amplify your concerns about our mental health resources, advocate for your needs, and bring back the Weekly Wellness event for a fun break from school. I'm eager to organize mental health awareness events too. I need your ideas and involvement - you're the heart of our school and I'm here to ensure you feel cared for and valued, so PLEEAASSEE feel free to reach out to me for anything! Ryoh Saotome (He/Him) - Co-Chair of Campus Improvement and Renovations

Hi!!! My name is Ryoh Saotome, and I will be your Senior Senator for Campus Improvement and Sustainability! I will be working to improve the campus in a convenient way. Lauryn Cooper (She/Her) - Royall Dorm Senator

Hi! I'm Lauryn and I will be serving as the Royall Dorm Senator this year as well as on the Academic Affairs and Outreach committees! I'm a Royall RLA from Greensboro, NC, where I run, play tennis, and serve my community. NCSSM is such a wonderful community with so many opportunities to connect. This year I'm excited to work towards student involvement in campus activities --- making sure that we're not just a school but a family. 

Morgan Cargill (She/Her) - Bryan Dorm Senator, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs Committee

Hey y'all, my name is Morgan Cargill and I am from Morganton, NC. I also attended Freedom High School before NCSSM.  I would like to advocate more for student safety, specifically regarding food options for students with dietary restrictions. I also would like to work towards academic equity and fairness with deadlines and testing, specifically for student athletes. I look forward to this year with SG here at NCSSM!

Skyler Qu (He/Him) - Junior Senator

Hi everyone! I'm Skyler Qu, and I enjoy bird watching, swimming, and hanging out with my friends. This year I will be serving as a Junior Senator for y'all! I will be doing my best to create a vibrant campus environment and enhance the overall campus experience for every student. Moreover if you have any suggestions for changes or renovations within this school, let me know! I look forward to working with you all this upcoming school year!

Celina Chen (She/Her) - Beall Dorm Senator

Hey! I'm Celina Chen, I'm from Charlotte and I'll be the Beall dorm senator for this school year. Within the senate, I plan to advocate for the students living in Beall and create more Beall centralized events that can uplift dorm spirit! 

Kush Mehta (He/Him) - Hunt West Dorm Senator, Internal Operations and Campus Improvement Committees

I am the oldest child with two younger siblings from Fayetteville North Carolina. I live in a house with 17  people, including extended family. I love to play soccer. As a Dorm Senator I want to give a voice to the people on Hunt West, but also everyone on campus by making changes that the students are actually asking for. 

Alina Sohail (She/Her) - Junior Senator, Student Affairs and Mental Health and Wellbeing Committees

I am so excited to be working with the student senate! I plan to focus on working more with student affairs and the mental health committee to better campus engagement by implementing new and unique events. I aim to do this by amplifying the voice of the student body to create an inclusive and diverse environment. 

Jiah Lee (She/Her) - Reynolds Dorm Senator, Internal Operations and Mental Health and Accessibility Committees

Hi! My name is Jiah Lee and I'm excited to serve as your Reynolds Dorm Senator! I love reading books and writing poetry and novels and am passionate about neuroscience. I’m on the Internal Operations and Mental Health and Accessibility Committees. My plans for the next year are creating a common calendar for scheduling club meetings without conflict and easily accessible petition boxes, but most importantly, promoting any ideas YOU have that you believe would improve our campus and community. I enjoy talking with people, so always feel free to come chat with me about anything! 

Zain Patel (He/Him) - Junior Senator, Academics and Internal Operations Committees

Hey y'all! I'm Zain. I am from Lumberton North Carolina and I am one of y'alls Junior Senators. A little bit about myself is that I enjoy eating, hanging out with my friends, working out, and running track. My goals as Junior Senator is to improve academics, mental health, and student laws. Ajrian Villanueva (He/Him) - Hunt East Dorm Senator, Campus Improvement and Renovation Committee

Hey I’m Ajrian Villanueva, the Hunt East Dorm Senator for this year. A little bit about myself is that I'm from Fayetteville, NC, I enjoy traveling and seeing new places, photography, and language learning. On campus, you’ll find me singing in club performances and participating in fests and block parties. Overall, I’m very active meeting new people, hanging out with friends, and enjoying events on and off campus. For my position, I plan to work with my other Hunt senator to improve conditions and fix broken equipment in our building, as well as assist in renovations to the campus, improving its condition as a whole.

Israel James (He/Him) - Junior Senator, Outreach and Campus Improvement and Renovation Committees

Hi everyone, I’m Israel James! I am from Rocky Mount, Nash County where I attended Rocky Mount High School. I am excited to serve as one of your Junior Senators for the 2023-2024 school year. In SG, I am on the Outreach Committee where I have helped in creating a student body wide survey. I am also on the Campus Improvement and Renovations Committee where I have made visual aids supporting sustainable practices for the Sustainafall event and the PFM. This year, I plan on connecting NCSSM with more local businesses in the Durham area and also making more outdoor sitting spaces on campus! In my free time I enjoy collecting rocks, making short TikTok videos, playing tennis, meeting new people, and watching tv. I’m excited to be a voice for the Junior Class and promise to hear your ideas, suggestions, and recommendations!!!

Victoria Choi (She/Her) - Academic Support Liaison 

Hi! My name is Victoria Choi, and I will be the Academic Support Liaison this year! I will work with Academic Programs and Affairs to ensure Academic Support fosters the necessary support to create a thriving learning environment for students. I plan to help make Academic Support a reliable and accessible source for everyone, with transparency and communication among students, teachers, and our various support groups including, CAAS, TAs, our counselors, and you! I'd love to hear any comments, questions, or concerns, so please don't hesitate to reach out!

Mansi Malhotra (She/Her) - Director of Campus Climate

Hey! My name is Mansi Malhotra, and I am this year's Director of Campus Climate. I will be working to develop cultural connections within our campus and to promote cultural diversity by creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students. I plan to host events that can foster an environment where people can experience others' cultures and help create a connection between our students. Sanjana Ram (She/Her) - Co-Director of Community Relations

Hey! I'm Sanjana, and I am one of your Directors of Community Relations for this school year. This year, my goal is to strengthen the student-community bond through engaging events and meaningful service projects. I plan to collaborate with local organizations to host panel sessions and fairs at our school. I also hope to increase community outreach by arranging visits to local schools and nursing homes. Ella Ovwigho (She/Her) - Co-Director of Community Relations

Hi!! I'm Ella, one of your Directors of Community Relations this school year. I'm from Durham, and I love exploring the city and other places all around the state! Along with exploring, I enjoy reading, writing, and hanging out with friends in my free time. As a certified Durham native, I'm looking forward to sharing fun activities and enrichment opportunities within Bull City and the surrounding RTP area for the NCSSM community to participate in. I'm dedicated to discovering local businesses and organizations that students would be interested in visiting, and potential internship/volunteer opportunities. Sawyer Kanoy (He/Him) - Director of Durham-Morganton Communications

I'm Sawyer, your Director of Durham-Morganton Communications for the 2023-2024 school year! I'm a very active person and I play lots of sports, I play on the varsity soccer team at school, and the men's club volleyball team. I love talking to new people and learning from everyone I meet, and in general, I just love people! I plan on working towards an event where Morganton students could come to Durham for a weekend or a few days and there could be activities all over campus all weekend long, and the main draw would be a Durham v. Morganton basketball game. I also want to create a pen pal system where you can have a cross-campus buddy to chat with similar to the ssib-jsib system. I'm super excited for the upcoming year and I can't wait to meet all the incoming juniors!!

Sam Nguyen - Elections Board Chair

Hi everyone! I’m Sam Nguyen, and I’ll be your Elections Board Chair this year, which means I organize and administer elections for NCSSM’s student government! I plan to make the process as streamlined and transparent as possible, such as diagrams to showcase the election process. Netra Parikh (She/Her) - Health and Safety Services Liaison 

Hi! My name is Netra and I am the Health and Safety Services Liaison for this year. I am looking to improve student and clinic staff relations, student and campus security relations, improve our amnesty policies, advocate for mental health days, improve our sexual health education, reform our Title IX policies to be more student-centered, and make contraceptives and reproductive health information more accessible on campus. May Neelon (She/Her) - Director of Information Technology

Hi, my name is May Neelon and I'll be serving as your Director of Information Technology this year. I'll be updating and improving the student government website and making it more helpful for everyone. I plan on making the website easier to navigate while adding more useful information, so that no student feels confused about anything relating to student government. Sydney Burkhart (She/Her) - PCC Liaison

Hi there! I'm Sydney, and I will be your Peer Counseling Coordinator Liaison this year! I'm from Wilmington and am always excited to talk about books, coffee, and Taylor Swift. As a PCC Liaison, I will serve as a connection between the counseling department and the student body to help execute counseling and student government initiatives. I plan to make information about the college application process much more available to my peers, as well as create several events surrounding mental wellness. I would love to hear any suggestions or questions from you this year!

Alexander Geodakyan (He/Him) - PFM/Food Services Liaison

Hi everyone! My name is Alex, and I'll be serving as the food services liaison for this year. My main plans for this year are to increase communication between the student body and the cafeteria, address feedback on the food being served, and improve support for athletics. I also want to work with the Muslim Student Association to provide necessary accommodations for Ramadan as well as continue with our former liaison's goal of establishing composting bins. In my free time, I really enjoy running, cycling, and gaming. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns! 

Jerin Mathew (She/Her) - Director of Public Relations

Hi, I'm Jerin Mathew and I'm your Director of Public Relations for the 2023-2024 year! I plan to be working to create an efficient distribution process of information about fun events and updates from the SG to the student body. I hope that through my position I can act as a direct link between the Student Government and students and can act as a reliable source to ensure that students know crucial SG information. One of my goals is to increase opportunities for interaction between the students and the SG and to draw more attention to these opportunities. I'm always happy to answer any questions and looking forward to meet everyone!

Zoya Das (She/Her) - Director of Online-Residential Communications

Hi everyone! My name is Zoya Das (she/her) and I am honored to serve as the Director of Online and Residential Communications. Being an online student myself, my main goal is to further the communication between the online and residential communities, and create more opportunities where the two can interact with each other. I also hope to revive the Junior/senior sibling program for the online students. Outside of school, I love drawing, listening to music, dancing, and writing poetry. Reva Kumar (She/Her) - Director of State Relations

Hey everyone! I'm Reva and I'm so excited to be your Durham Director of State Relations this year. I'm looking forward to increasing resources and support for minority and LGBTQ+ students and collaborating with other UNC system schools to systemically work through issues in sustainability, DEI, and more accessibility for neurodiverse students. I'm dedicated to improving and representing our campus and learning more about issues that press our school, so please reach out if you have any concerns or questions. Nikki Gogineni (She/Her) - Student Activities Liaison

Hi everyone! My name is Nikki Gogineni, and I'll be your Student Activities Board Liaison this year. My #1 priority is to create an enjoyable and welcoming campus environment through exciting activities and events. One of my main goals is to incorporate more student input, ensuring that your voices are heard when it comes to planning activities and making decisions, such as selecting a prom theme. Audrey Allison (She/Her) - Sustainability Liaison

Hi, My name is Audrey Allison! I use she/her pronouns, I’m from Statesville NC, and I am very excited to be NCSSM’s sustainability liaison. I enjoy anything involving the outdoors and nature, such as hiking, paddle boarding, and working with birds. With my position, I want to focus on community outreach about the programs we have currently on campus. Increasing awareness about our compost bins, proper recycling/waste management, and ways to give back to campus nature are all on my to-do list for this year. Treasury Advisory Board

Caroline Stallings (She/Her) - Attaché Liaison

Hi everyone! My name is Caroline Stallings, and I am super excited to be this year’s Attaché Liaison. I will be working as a bridge between the NCSSM Foundation and Student Government Treasury. I will relay questions, concerns, and potential collaborations between the two groups. I will also help NCSSM Senate members working on advancements and projects that may need financial support. In my free time, I enjoy kayaking, swimming, reading, and hanging out with my friends. I look forward to working with the NCSSM Foundation and Student Government Treasury! Maria Foust (They/She) - Club Chartering Advisor

Hello! My name is Maria Foust. I'm big on writing poetry, crafting, and making sure this schools resources are easily accessible to all. As the Club Chartering Advisor, I plan to create a website/ Google drive containing all of the updated and essential information a student might need to get involved in the many communities that make up our campus. 

Suchetana Kona (She/Her) - Club Funding Advisor

Hi I’m Suchi and I will be the club funding advisor! I will be in charge of the process for getting funding for clubs and maintaining the receipts after the money has been spent. Maruthi Vemula (He/Him) - Financial Analysis Advisor

Hi, my name is Maruthi! I am from Concord, NC and I love finding patterns in data. Through my role as the financial analysis advisor, I am hoping to find insights into the school budget and how we spend it to figure out how we can better optimize the budget to spend it on what really matters: the students! 

Zoe Tang (She/Her) - Inventory Advisor

Hi everyone! I am Zoe Tang, and I am so excited to be your Inventory Advisor for this year! Some of my responsibilities include: updating the inventory monthly, publicizing inventory to the student body, and advising funding based on the inventory. My main objective for this year is to completely reorganize the SAB closet and create an easier system where all of you can easily access and check out needed supplies. Also, I plan on creating infographics to keep you all updated on these changes. In my free time, I enjoy going on walks, grabbing coffee or a meal with friends, or going on spontaneous adventures!
